Abstract | The success of any management strategy rests on its ability to set harvest rates that do not impair future sustainability. As the oceans warm, become more acidic, and lose oxygen, there is no alternative but to account for the impact of environmental variability on fisheries dynamics. In this chapter we discuss patterns of population variability in marine fisheries and provide an updated scheme to classify the dynamics of fish stocks based on a set of biologically motivated time series probes. Then we succinctly review some of the hypotheses proposed to explain fluctuations in fisheries abundance and highlight how recent developments in Earth observations, ecological forecasting, and probabilistic modeling bring the opportunity to solve some of the pressing issues in marine fisheries science. |
