Abstract
There is an increasing recognition that ocean sustainability is embedded in complex interactions between people and environment. Management of such social–ecological systems requires the integration of natural and social sciences. This section synthesis features a series of contributions that examine frameworks for understanding local social contexts that are essential for socially responsible ocean governance.
