Abstract | Phytoplankton activity underpins marine food webs, yet we have struggled to elucidate their diverse metabolism and physiology using traditional methods. Transcriptomics offers the ability to view the immediate cellular response of algae and algal communities to varying environmental conditions, as well as an alternative to sequencing the genome of protists, which can be challenging. Here, we review insights from transcriptomics into the ecology, evolution, and physiology of freshwater and marine phytoplankton, and offer best practices for the implementation of future transcriptomic projects on phytoplankton. |
