Abstract
The presence of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas) in the coastal waters of the Netherlands and in the southern North Sea is discussed. The species is absent from the Wadden Sea and all Dutch estuaries, but is common in the southern North Sea off the southern part of the Netherlands and off Belgium. In some other parts of the southern North Sea with very similar conditions of grain size, temperature and salinity, it is absent. The occurrence of Branchiostoma is related to the presence of the so-called “Channel Water”, indicating that lancelets avoid the coastal water types.
