Abstract | Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous in the environment and consistently occur in water sources used for drinking water production. Most PFAS sources are associated with anthropogenic activities, however, PFAS have also been found in areas where no direct link can be established with industrial and/or urban activities. Recently, sea-spray aerosols (SSA) have been linked to PFAS contamination in the atmosphere. PFAS in air appears to be related to the presence of SSA, according to research at two sites relevant to drinking water production. Further investigations of deposition and transport in soil are needed to properly assess the risks to drinking water production. |
