Abstract | With the exception of the Boston Harbor and one or two other port/industrial sites, the Gulf of Maine has remained relatively unimpacted by urban and industrial contamination compared to its earlier status and waters such as the New York Bight. This chapter reviews natural environmental variables, the status of shallow water embayments and coastal waters, and the condition of the contained living marine resources. Principal fisheries are in poor condition today, albeit more intense management of the "take" and habitat quality, are beginning to result in limited improvements to the status of the stocks and their habitat. |
