Abstract
Integrated coastal zone management aims at a sustainable use of the natural resources, the protection of natural values, and the avoidance of conflicts on the use of the aquatic system. International and national legislation is more and more based on these principles. In Belgium, coastal zones have long been managed by several authorities and a fragmented legislative apparatus. The recent legislation on the protection of the marine environment can lead to a more coordinated management for the Belgian marine environment and the coastal zone.
