Abstract
    Studies completed in the laboratory at Bremerhaven have shown that the growth (increase in dry-tissue weight) of small Mytilus edulis L. is an increasing function of the dry weight of algal cells ingested, up to an optimal level. This is also reflected by the gross growth efficiency which increases with ingested ration to an optimal value and then decreases with any further increase in ration. The maintenance ration or the amount of food necessary to maintain a constant weight was found to depend on body size. For smaller mussels a larger percentage of the ration is necessary to counterbalance the total metabolic demand. Growth was also influenced by the way in which the food was presented to the mussels, although the same total ration was ingested. The significance of this is discussed in terms of the cell concentration at which the algal suspension was presented.
