Abstract
The densities of the appendicularians Oikopleura dioica and Fritillaria borealis and their potential food in the North Sea nearby the island of Sylt were investigated for 1 year. In conjunction with these studies feeding, growth, mortality and reproduction were measured in the laboratory at different phytoplankton concentrations at 13 °C. Generation times and fecundity of O. dioica were determined at temperatures between 7 and 18 °C in seawater passing through a 180pm mesh. The results indicate that generation times of 3-3.5 weeks and a fecundity of close to 250 eggs per female are sufficient to keep the standing stock of Appendicularia even during late winter and early spring, when they are preyed upon by larvae of plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L., and sandeel, Ammodytes sp., in the Southern Bight of the North Sea.
