Abstract
The impact of pollution on the Wadden Sea ecosystem has been a topic of growing concern in recent years. Sufficient information on the local distribution of various contaminants in water, sediment and biota is available and, when combined with ecotoxicological data on the effects of these contaminants on Wadden Sea biota, predictions as to possible consequences can be made. A logic framework is being developed to organise these diverse types of information into cause-effect chains in order to estimate ecological risks in the field situation. This framework, called REFEREE, and the principles on which it is based are described in this paper. REFEREE consists of a number of effect models linked to ecological and ecotoxicological databases. The environmental risks associated with contamination in the Wadden Sea have been calculated as an example of the technique and are presented here.
