Abstract
Since 1988 a Geographic Information System (GIS-WEST) has been in operation on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Different forms of human land use of the area surrounding the Wadden Sea proper are mapped and stored as separate information layers: landscape elements, coastal protection, recreation, agriculture, eco-potential, infrastructure and settlement, legal status. By means of map overlay, regions of conflict can be singled out. The data are presented as maps and tables. GIS can be an instrument to link responsibilities in physical planning at the border of land and sea in Schleswig-Holstein.
