Abstract
The energy exchange between internal waves of finite amplitude and a simple steady shear flow is investigated in the case where the overall Richardson number is large. It is shown that the progressive transfer of the wave energy to the mean flow due to the action of the shear is the main exchange mechanism for infinitesimal waves. However, breaking due to gravitational or dynamical instability becomes very important for large amplitude waves, so that a wave theory becomes inadequate for describing energy exchanges between finite amplitude waves and a mean shear current.
