Abstract
Observations taken by Waldichuk in Departure Bay, British Columbia in 1968 and 1969 revealed that rapid changes in the surface temperature occur within a few hours of a change in wind direction. This paper describes two mathematical models for the circulation. One treats the steady-state hornogeneous problem taking bottom topography into account while, the second includes thermal effects but not topography. The numerical method used in the latter complicated three-dimensional problem is a variation of that devised by Chorin. It is planned to add the bottom topography in future models and thus obtain a general model adequate for a wide variety of oceanic problems such as coastal upwelling, dispersal and spread of pollutants, thermohaline circulations and other convection phenomena.
