Abstract
This chapter discusses the nature of the feeds necessary for the culture of freshwater prawn larvae. Artemia play an essential role as a larval diet in freshwater prawn hatcheries. This chapter therefore pays detailed attention to the supply and processing of Artemia cysts. The natural nutritional quality of Artemia and its enhancement are also reviewed, before their specific use for feeding freshwater prawn larvae is discussed. Partial alternatives to Artemia , both live and inert, are also considered. While the feeding strategies used in research and commercial freshwater prawn hatcheries are detailed in Chapters 5 and 6, the present chapter provides some additional background on this topic.
