Abstract | Pilot studies conducted in the English Channel and North Sea, along with international intercalibration exercises in the 1990s, have helped validate the method for measurement of ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) which is dependent on the CYP4501A system. These stages have provided the basis to develop a detoxification biomarker for use in monitoring applications. The fluorescence-based EROD enzyme microplate assay has the advantage of being a fast, inexpensive and easily implemented method. The method described is the outcome of ten years of experience supported by the national observation network RNO. Some data on marine finfish collected in their natural environment and subjected to exposure in the laboratory are used to present a range of variations of use in interpreting EROD enzyme activity on the Channel, North Sea and Mediterranean coasts. |
