Abstract | To address material transport from terrestrial basins to the coastal zone, it is necessary to synthesize existing data on watershed export and improve our ability to make predictions over both space and time. Synthesis of existing data on watershed export must account for the processes of transformation, storage, and removal which become important at larger scales. In this chapter we propose a set of general principles, major approaches, and priorities in order to understand material transport to coastal areas, and we review useful modeling approaches. We also suggest ways to remove obstacles to synthesis and propose selected projects that could provide significant advances toward understanding material transport to the coastal zone. |
