Abstract
An overview is given of the distribution and habitat characteristics of breeding birds in the Flemish coastal dunes and salt marshes. Until now, 149 species were already recorded as breeding species. Of these, only three species which breed in the dune-area are coast-specific: little tern [Sterna albifrons]. Sandwich tern [S. Sandvicensis]. Kentish plover [Charadrius alexandrinus] and wheatear [Oenanthe oenanthe]. In contrast to the dunes, species of sand flats and salt marshes have higher affinities with the coast. The species composition is determined by vegetation succession, dvnamics and the amount of anthropogenic influence. Salt marshes, sandv beaches, dune slacks and dune grasslands in particular are all characterised by a high number of dune preferentlal species. In dune shrubs, the species composition depends on shrub size [which is correlated with internal habitat heterogeneity] and its mosaic configuration. Over decades, three major trends in species composition alteration were visible. Species from open dune and beach habitats, which suffered from an increased recreational pressure are [almost] extinct. Numbers of hvgrophilous species decreased, probably due to water catchment and diversity and density of woodlands species increased due to scrub encroachment and forest generation.
