Abstract | A first inventory of ostracods from the Bay of Seine is presented. More than 100 species are identified; they are considered as epineritic species and most of them are known from the southern coast of England. A correspondance analysis shows that the stations group into two faunal assemblages according to the input of freshwater from the river Seine and the percentage of fine particules in the sediment. From a biogeographical point of view, the ostracods of the Bay of Seine can be divided into two main groups: firstly boreal species, which are not recorded south of the English Channel, secondly species with a large biogeographical range which are known from the Norwegian coast of the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay or to the Mediterranean Sea or the coast of Morocco. A parsimonious analysis is used to establish biogeographical relationship between five areas: North Sea, Bay of Seine, Bay of Biscay, Morocco Coast and western Mediterranean Sea. Two groups are identified from this analysis; firstly the two southern areas, and secondly the three boreal areas. In the Bay of Seine, the ratio of ostracods/foraminifers is lower than 6%. |
