Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the taxonomy (i.e. problems regarding species identification and nomenclature), morphology/anatomy, ecology and biogeography of the species of the genus Dictyopteris Lamouroux in the western Indian Ocean. The latter resulted in the description of 9 species and 3 undetermined specimens, accompanied by clarifying drawings and photos, distribution maps, short habitat descriptions and a determination key. Most species could be described sufficiently, except some species for which herbarium material was scarce. For the species D. serrata the type material was compared with specimens collected by the Algology group at the East Coast of South Africa. The rather limited distribution and the linked rareness of the species were noted. An attempt to resolve the D. polypodioides – D. membranacea complex led to a limited description and an extensive discussion regarding the nomenclature. The other complex, D. delicatula – D. repens, could be resulved using PCA and resulted in the distinction between these two species based on the presence (D. delicatula) or absence (D. repens) of a submarginal vein. Two new descriptions for South-Africa were noted. D. acrostichoides and D. australis, originally Australian species, were found at the East Coast of South Africa. For D. ligulata no clear conclusion could be made due to a lack of literature. Other species that were described are: D. woodwardia and D. macrocarpa.
