Abstract
Eleven species were identified for the area studied. Some of these species had not been mentioned before for this region. Padina elegans Koh ex Womersley had only been described for South-Australia and Padina glabra Gaillard had only been described for India and Pakistan. Affinities were found between the algal flora of South-Australia and South-Africa: the species Padina boergesenii and P. gymnospora are known in both regions. Additionally, the latter species is not very common in the Indian Ocean, despite many (incorrect) descriptions. Also Socotra has two species in common with South-Australia: P. elegans and P. boergesenii. In the collection of Oman specimens were present that could represent transition forms between Padina dubia, P. gymnospora, and P. glabra. However, further research is warranted. Finally, I can conclude that the variation of certain traits, within known species, is greater than generally accepted. This is especially true for the number of cell layers, the development of hairs and the habitus of Padina thalli. The latter has been discussed thoroughly in the discussion of the studied species.
