Abstract
A study about the biological condition of the great scallop (Pecten maximus) was carried out. The scallops were collected in the Eastern English Channel (Nab to Beachy Head). The evolution of the seasonal variation in meanwet gonads, mean wet muscle and mean total wet meat weights was studied (feb. 1985 till june 1985).As would be inspected the weight of thegonad was at its maximum in the spring prior to spawning and reached a minimum in the autumn. The variation in the muscle weight was almost the inverse of this. The result was that the total meat yield did not vary significantly although two maxima, one just before spawning and another in October was noted. Ultimately it can be remarked that the protein content of the muscle was always higher than the gonads content. As to the ashes and fat content the highest levels were. always noted in the gonads.
