Abstract
On 23 September 2005 a small shipment of twaite shad Alosa fallax, caught near Newhaven, UK, was confiscated at the fish market of Zeebrugge, Belgium. This is a protected species in Belgium, and it can therefore not be sold. The 65 animals (with a total weight of 24.5kgs) measured 30 to 47cms (average 35.6cms, S.D. 4.2cms), and the number of spots on the left lateral side was 1 to 13 (average 4, S.D. 2.3). Of 20 animals, including all those with only one lateral spot on each side, the gill rakers on the first gill arch were counted. These gill rakers numbered 38 to 44 (average 40, S.D. 1.8), and it can be concluded that all animals were indeed twaite shad. The allis shad Alosa alosa resembles the twaite shad but it has more gill rakers. The fact that allis shad has no, or only one spot on the lateral side, should never be used for identification purposes. Allis shad is probably extinct in the southern North Sea.
