Abstract
In the biogeographical sense the Adriatic Sea forms part of the Mediterranean entity and has been connected with it throughout its history. In its main lines the Mediterranean region is homogenous regarding the origin of its benthic fauna and living world in general as well as with regard to the basic structure of its biocoenoses; the distribution of biogeographical elements, and the modification of the qualitative structure of biocoenoses have led to the division of the Mediterranean region into several biogeographical subunits. In this sense the Adriatic Sea forms a separate subunit of the Mediterranean Region, characterized by some individual properties of its ecological conditions and distribution of species, and also by some endemic species of its own. The special characters of the ecological conditions in the Adriatic derive particularly from its position, genesis and geomorphology.
