Abstract | This paper gives a summary of the results obtained during the Antar02/II contract. Two hydrodynamic numerical models are presented. Tbe first one consist of a 2.5D baroclinic model and the second one of a 3D barotropic model. The 2.5D model solves the 3D hydrodynamic equations on a vertical plane, the derivatives perpendicular to the plane are considered to be zero. Both models are explicit in time and make use of the MAC method to solve the equations. Tbe 2.5D model is used to calculate tbe influence of stratification on the wind induced currents on the continental shelf and the shelf break in presence of an ice cover and to simulate the currents off the coast of Adélie land forced by a katabatic wind. Tbe 3D model has been applied to a coastal area at Terra Nova. The ocean is again forced by a katabatic wind. Interesting to note is that tbe surface flow calculated by both models is in agreement with the theory of coastal polynia formation. |
