Abstract
Research in marine sedimentology is currently being subject to a renewal of techniques and concepts, which is considered by the mean of selected exampIes. Geochemical logging tools have been recentIy developed; they enable a rapid and continuous record of elemental composition, lithology, mineralogy and physicochemical properties of sedimentary series. High resolution electron microscopy techniques lead to a better knowledge of the fine-grained constituents of past sediments such as clay minerals: sources, conditions of transport and deposition, tectonic and diagenetic control. Recent progress in paleoceanography is considered about the thermal structure of the ocean, the dissolution of pelagic carbonates, the sedimentary hiatuses and the paleocirculation characteristics; it indicates strong differences between past geological and recent conditions. The accumulations of organic matter during geological times are described in relation with the hydrologic structure of the basins, the plate tectonic context and the large-scale cycles of the Earth's history. Final!y the rhythmic sedimentary events, associated with climatic and biologic changes, are replaced among the astronomical forcing phenomena, which sometimes interfer with internal terrestrial causes. .
