Abstract
The system of COST - Co-operation in the field of Science and Technological Research - is described in general terms together with its development and present status. Mentioned are existing COST actions in the fields of oceanography and meteorology and some ideas for new COST action in the future. The results of research in oceanography are illustrated, mentioning the Third Conference on Marine Technology held in Lisbon in May 1998 in particular. On it the research led by European Commission was reviewed and plans for the future in the 5th Framework Programme and EUREKA were discussed.
