Abstract
The integrated coastal safety master plan (Afdeling Kust, 2011) has been approved by the Flemish government to realize protections against extreme storm events. However, the present coastal defenses in the Flemish coast do not fully satisfy these criteria. One of the weak links in the Flemish coast is Middelkerke zone (Zone 74-88). In this zone, storm return wall and stilling wave basin concept will be used to reduce wave overtopping over the dikes. The design wall height and wave force will be studied by numerical models (wave transformation in shallow foreshore) and physical models (wave overtopping and wave force).
