Abstract
The spatial and temporal paterns of the hyperbenthos of the intertidal and very shallow subtidal areas of the Belgian beaches, as well as the population dynamics of the dominant hyperbenthic species, will be investigated. Baseline data will become available for the calculation of energy fluxes to higher trophic lelvels (mainly demersal fish and macrocrustaceans). Finally, the importance of beaches as nursery areas for larval and early postlarval (hyperbenthos) and 0+ demersal fish and epibenthic macrocrustaceans (epibenthos) will be estimated.
