| Abstract | The Tiger scud Gammarus tigrinus is a species that originates from North America. In 1931, the species was introduced into Europe (in England and Ireland) via the ballast water of transport ships and later deliberately introduced into Germany (1957) and the Netherlands (1960). The Tiger scud was first observed in Belgium in 1991. It is possible that the introduction into Belgium occurred by natural spread via the Meuse river or unintentionally during the introduction of fish from the Netherlands into Belgian waterways. It is a species found in fresh to brackish environments, where it can often spread rapidly due to human activity. |
