Abstract
The shrimp Penaeus aztecus is originally found along the eastern coast of North America. In 2018, a shrimp was caught in the Scheldt that was tentatively identified as Penaeus aztecus. To date, the species has only been observed once in Belgium. It is likely that the species cannot yet establish permanent populations in Belgium. The primary introduction vector is currently unclear but may include escape from aquaculture facilities, transport via ballast water (likely the vector for the introduction in the Scheldt), or intentional introduction.
