Abstract | Keratella tropica is, like most rotifers, widespread. This animal lives in tropical and subtropical freshwaters, but the species also thrives in temperate areas during the summer. This rotifer is a free-swimming species that tolerates brackish water. It ended up in our regions via the ballast water of ships travelling through channels or via birds. In 1974, the first Belgian observation occurred in the Donk Lake and the Watersportbaan in Ghent (East Flanders). Today, the species has colonised the headwaters of the Scheldt and Sea Scheldt. |
