Abstract | The Warty comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi is a notorious predator on zooplankton and fish eggs. This species is native to the Atlantic coasts of North and South America but was accidentally introduced to the Black Sea in the 1980s via the ballast water of cargo ships. Its introduction caused a collapse of the ecosystem. For some years, the warty comb jelly has been present in the North Sea. In 2007, it was observed for the first time in Belgium. It remains unclear what the ecological consequences are in our region of the introduction of this alien species. |
